Buena
Vista Vacation Info Center
Buena Vista is a beautiful
small mountain town sitting at 8,000
feet
at the base of Mount Princeton, 14,197 feet. Approximately 2,200
people live in Buena Vista, Colorado. During the summer, Buena
Vista sees a huge influx of people due to its presence on the
Arkansas River which is one of the most popular rivers in the
world for white water rafting. Guides and customers come from
all around the world to see the beautiful and gnarly stretches
of river called the Numbers, Brown's Canyon, Parkdale, and the
Royal Gorge. Also during the summer, many peak baggers come
to Buena Vista because of its close proximity to so many of
Colorado's fourteen thousand-foot peaks. Chaffee County has
more fourteeners than any other county in the country and Buena
Vista sits in the heart of this beautiful county. In the winter,
Buena Vista is about an hour from both Monarch Ski Area and
Copper Mountain Resort. You can also enjoy backcountry skiing,
snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
Main
Attractions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buena Vista is a small town that sits in a gorgeous valley surrounded
by public lands on all sides. Thus, most of its attractions
are outdoor recreational activities. In the winter, enjoy skiing
at either Monarch Ski Area or Copper Mountain Resort. In the
summer, enjoy whitewater rafting down the Numbers or Brown's
Canyon, both runs are on the Arkansas River and are very close
to Buena Vista. In July, Buena Vista has an Art Walk when all
of the galleries stay open late, offer wine and appetizers,
and feature local artists. In August, Buena Vista has a festival
called Gold Rush Days, which has craft vendors, a parade, and
a pack-burro race (the only sport indigenous to rural Colorado).
Year round you can enjoy Cottonwood Hot Springs or Mount Princeton
Hot Springs, where you can actually sit in the river where the
hot springs come out of the ground! Make sure to check the Buena
Vista Chamber of Commerce web site for any local events that
might be happening while you are in town.
Activities
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is not much of a nightlife in Buena Vista, so most of
the activities
are
daytime outdoor recreational activities. Year-round activities
include horseback riding, shopping, and hiking (there is very
rarely snow in town and in the surrounding hillside areas).
Summer activities include sightseeing, golfing, hiking, camping,
biking, fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting. Winter activities
include, skiing, telemark skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, and
snowshoeing. Please check with the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce
before planning your vacation for any local events that might
be going on while you are in town.
Dining
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although Buena Vista does not have as many restaurants as the
major resorts, there are still some gems and plenty of places
to fill the belly on your vacation. For breakfast, enjoy the
Evergreen Café. For lunch, try some homemade barbecue
at Smokehouse BBQ Barbecue and Grill or cross the street to
Bongo Billy's Café, which has the best coffee in town
and a healthy selection for both lunch and breakfast. For dinner,
enjoy a hearty steak at Quincy's Restaurant. Buena Vista also
has a Chinese restaurant and a couple of Mexican restaurants.
Lodging
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buena Vista has many lodging opportunities including bed and
breakfasts, locally owned or chain hotels/motels, and vacation
homes and cabins. Of course, we recommend you consider renting
a vacation home, cabin, or cottage for your Buena Vista lodging,
since it is often the same price as a bed and breakfast or a
hotel/motel, but has the privacy and space of a house, rather
than that of a hotel room.
Real
Estate
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buena Vista is a great place to invest in real estate. Buena
Vista has seen rapid growth and gentrification in the last ten
years, which is only going to continue since it is such a beautiful
area. There are plenty of excellent Buena Vista realtors that
can help you find the best in Buena Vista, Colorado Real Estate.
Weather
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buena Vista sits in a valley considered the Banana Belt. Even
though it is high in elevation, it enjoys over 300 days of sunshine
and a very temperate climate. In July the average high is 81
with a low of 47 and in January the average high is 39 with
a low of 10.
Airport
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two largest and easiest airports to fly into are the Denver
International Airport (DIA) which is 148 miles from Buena Vista
or the City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS) which
is 104 miles from Buena Vista.
News
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buena Vista has a weekly newspaper called the Chaffee County
Times which was established March 18, 1880, and still services
the area.
